Who is this trip for?
  • This adventure is ideal for intermediate ski tourers and confident off-piste skiers looking to experience their first multi-day hut-to-hut ski touring journey. The Silvretta offers the perfect progression from single-day tours to a classic alpine traverse, combining achievable daily ascents with spectacular glacier scenery and comfortable mountain huts.
Fitness
  • A good level of fitness is essential. You should be comfortable ascending approximately 900-1,000 vertical metres per day while carrying a day pack (we recommend a maximum pack weight of around 12 kg). Our guides set a steady, enjoyable pace of around 300 vertical metres per hour, allowing plenty of time to appreciate the stunning alpine scenery. To get the most from your tour, we recommend preparing with regular aerobic exercise such as hiking, ski touring, cycling or running.
  • Top Tip: Ensure your ski touring boots are well broken in before the trip – at least test them on your first day in St. Anton. New or rental boots are one of the most common causes of blisters on multi-day tours.
Ski Ability
  • This trip is suitable for Level 2-3 skiers with some previous ski touring experience. You should be a confident off-piste skier, capable of skiing a variety of snow conditions, including powder, spring snow and variable terrain. It is not suitable for Level 1 skiers. Previous hut-to-hut experience is not essential. Your adventure begins with a dedicated Ski Touring Skills Workshop in St. Anton, giving you the opportunity to practise touring techniques, transitions and equipment use before heading into the high mountains. Throughout the week, your guide will continue to provide coaching and technique tips, helping you develop your ski touring skills and confidence.
  • If you are unsure whether this trip is right for you, please get in touch with the Piste to Powder team. We’ll be happy to discuss your skiing experience and fitness to help you choose the most suitable adventure. If you’re new to ski touring, we recommend joining one of our Ski Touring Workshops during the season or considering our Silvretta Mini Tour, a shorter introduction to hut-to-hut ski touring and an excellent stepping stone to the full Silvretta Traverse.

From there, the Vermuntbahn cable car and a thrilling tunnel bus ride carry us up to Bielerhöhe at 2,032 m (6,667 ft), where our Hut to Hut adventure begins. After dropping our bags at our overnight lodge, we’ll set out with light packs to explore one of the region’s breathtaking valleys. This first day is all about building confidence. With wide-open terrain, gentle gradients and enjoyable descents, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to practise efficient skinning, transitions and kick turns while settling into the rhythm of hut-to-hut touring.Back at the Madlenerhaus, we’ll enjoy a hearty alpine dinner before your guide briefs the group on the exciting days ahead.
  3. Day 3: Madlenerhaus to WiesbadenerhütteToday we venture deeper into the Silvretta, travelling through spectacular glacier scenery towards the historic Wiesbadenerhütte. Skinning beneath the imposing north face of Piz Buin (3,312 m / 10,866 ft), the highest peak in the Silvretta, we’ll cross high mountain passes and enjoy memorable descents before reaching our next mountain hut. Expect around 800 metres (2,620 to 3,280 ft) of skinning with the option of a second afternoon tour from the hut for the energetic!Arriving at the Wiesbadenerhütte, you’ll have time to relax and soak up the incredible alpine setting before another excellent mountain dinner.
  4. Day 4: Wiesbadenerhütte to JamtalhütteToday is one of the highlights of the traverse as we cross from Austria into Switzerland through the heart of the Silvretta Alps. Expect a full day of ski touring with around 900 to 1,000 metres (2,950 to 3,280 ft) of ascent and approximately 12 to 14 km (7.5 to 8.7 miles) of travel.Throughout the day we’ll travel beneath towering peaks, cross glaciated terrain and enjoy long scenic descents before arriving at the welcoming Jamtalhütte, one of the most famous ski touring huts in the Alps and a favourite stop for generations of mountaineers.
  1. Day 5: Jamtalhütte to HeidelbergerhütteOur last hut traverse day in this spectacular Silvretta region brings more classic ski touring as we make our way towards the iconic Heidelbergerhütte, still in Switzerland but now close to the Austrian border. Expect another rewarding day of approximately 800 to 1,000 metres (2,620 to 3,280 ft) of ascent over 12 to 14 km (7.5 to 8.7 miles), combining scenic climbs, flowing descents and breathtaking alpine panoramas. The Heidelbergerhütte provides the perfect setting for our final evening together, where we’ll celebrate an unforgettable hut-to-hut journey with good food, great company and memories that will last long after the tour has ended.
  2. Day 6: Heidelbergerhütte to Ischgl & Return to St. AntonEnjoy one final morning ski tour from the Heidelberger Hütte before making your final descent into Ischgl, one of the Alps’ most famous ski resorts. Depending on conditions, we’ll often squeeze in one last rewarding climb and descent before leaving the high mountains behind, making the very most of our final day together. After a well-earned coffee or celebratory drink in Ischgl, we’ll return to St. Anton, bringing an unforgettable week of hut-to-hut ski touring to a close. From the trip description by Piste to Powder

One of the highlights of the Silvretta Ski Touring Week is staying in traditional alpine mountain huts. Perched high in the spectacular glacier valleys of the Silvretta Alps at around 2,300 metres, each hut offers a warm welcome, comfortable accommodation and a wonderful atmosphere after a rewarding day in the mountains.

All of the mountain huts are fully serviced and provide comfortable dormitory-style accommodation with heated dining rooms and washroom facilities. Most huts have hot showers (usually coin-operated), and hut slippers are generally provided, with the exception of Jamtalhütte.

Evenings are one of the most memorable parts of the trip. After a hearty dinner, guests often relax over a drink, share stories from the day’s adventure or enjoy a game of cards before an early night, ready for the next day’s tour.

Mountain hut hospitality is excellent. Half-board accommodation includes a generous breakfast and a wholesome three-course evening meal, often including soup and dessert.

Breakfasts are typically buffet-style with fresh bread, cheeses, cold meats, muesli, tea and coffee.

Packed lunches can be purchased each morning for a small additional charge. If you bring a thermos flask, the huts are usually happy to fill it with hot tea for the day’s tour.

One of the advantages of hut-to-hut touring in the Silvretta is that you only need to carry a lightweight day pack. Along with your daily essentials, you’ll need a small change of clothes for the evening. The huts are warm and heated, so there is no need for heavy extra clothing.

Please remember to bring:

A silk or lightweight sleeping bag liner (essential, as blankets and pillows are provided but sleeping bag liners are required).

A lightweight travel towel if you prefer not to hire one at the huts.

A thermos flask for hot drinks during the day.

Getting There

We recommend arriving in St Anton the day before your Ski Touring Skills Workshop.

Many of our guests choose to stay in Pettneu am Arlberg, just 8 minutes from St Anton on the free ski bus. It offers excellent value, a wide choice of friendly guesthouses and hotels, including the popular Pettneuerhof.

Alternatively, there are plenty of accommodation options in St Anton itself, as well as the neighbouring villages of Schnann and Flirsch.

Our friendly Piste to Powder Host Team will be delighted to recommend and arrange accommodation before and after your tour, helping you find the option that best suits your budget and travel plans.
