Terrain, ability and who it is for
- The Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt is a demanding high-mountain ski traverse that requires solid ski touring experience, excellent fitness, and strong technical ability in both skiing and mountaineering terrain. This is not a tour for beginners or those new to multi-day ski touring.
- You must have completed at least one multi-day hut-to-hut ski tour prior to this trip.
- Be confident in managing long ascents (up to 5 hours / 1100m vertical gain per day) at a steady, sustainable pace.
- Efficient skinning technique is essential, especially on steep and exposed traverses .
- You should be comfortable executing kick turns on slopes of 35° or steeper , even in challenging snow conditions.
- You must be an advanced to expert off-piste skier , capable of skiing in a wide range of snow types (powder, crust, breakable crust, spring snow, etc.).
- Confidently ski sustained 40° slopes without hesitation, loss of control, or frequent stops.
- Strong downhill skiing skills are crucial for safety, especially when carrying a multi-day pack in glaciated and remote terrain.
- You must be familiar with using crampons and an ice axe on steep snow slopes and potentially a little exposed alpine terrain.
- Be comfortable with mountaineering sections that may include boot-packing on steep snow, easy scrambling over mixed (snow/rock) terrain, and using ropes for safety when necessary (you would be secured by your guide).
- Fitness level 4/5
- Excellent cardiovascular fitness is required. Expect to be on the move for 6–8 hours per day , often in high altitude (above 3000m).
- You should be able to maintain a consistent climbing pace of 400 vertical meters per hour .
- You must be fit enough to recover well overnight and be ready to perform again the following day over the course of a full week.
